Pinewood Derby Cupcakes!

My kids think I am THE coolest. I make homemade matchbox cars. This week I got to make up for all the years my brothers made their own cars and styled them just right- while I just watched. The hostess of this "Derby" said that the cake topper cars went to the boys whose cars came in last, and these edible cars were possibly more coveted than the real trophys.
The cupcakes were topped with little cars that were mini replicates of the big ones and flags with the cars number.
Go Pack 459!!!

(Thanks for the great picture Kaele!)

Butterfly Butterfly

This was a cake for a wedding reception and the hostess  let me decide how to decorate it. I knew the bride to bes'  (how do you spell that?) colors and I just wanted a reason to make these butterflies. How cute would it be to completely cover a cake with little butterflies or make a swarm of butterfly cupcakes!
This was a 12" 5 layer Italian Cream cake with alternating layers of cream cheese frosting and vanilla cream.
I had to weigh it- 12 pounds (!!!!)
This is a pre-frosting picture next to an apple for size perspective (this ones for you Sharlie :)

Peanut Butter and Chocolate!

Start of the butterfly cakes! Happy Birthday Avalon!
This cake was an 8" 5 layer chocolate cake with alternating layers of chocolate mousse buttercream, and peanut butter filling, then covered with chocolate caramel peanutbutter ganache! Death by peanut butter and chocolate! The ganache was a little shiny so I couldn't get a clear picture :)

Rex the Dinosaur

before he got glossed up
I got a request for a dinosaur but not a SCARY one so I thought of Rex from Toy Story. He was for a 4 year olds birthday party- we thought he turned out cute and not too scary at all...  I will post some pics from the party when Ethan's mom gets a chance to send them :)
side view so you can see his size compared to gallon of milk

Boy Scout Birthday

Blake turned 9 and wanted a Boy Scout theme for his party and crocodile for his school class. Can you say BOY all the way?
We added a few fish cupcakes to make enough for the whole class. My friends son was in his class and he told his mom "we had the best cupcakes today!" (Thanks Noah!)
The scout boy (as my 6 year old calls them) has his troup number on his flag and the accompanying cupcakes have flags with 9 for his age. You cant see here but I put his badges on his shoulder and chest along with his "Wolf" scarf. Happy Birthday Blake!!
This is a 4 layer 6 inch cake. Chocolate mousse filling.

More MARIO along with Bowser JR.

Another Mario Kart fan and this time his favorite character is Bowser Jr. I did two little cake platforms and then "Stars" "Bob-ombs" and Mushrooms to top the cupcakes. These cupcakes had a peanut butter filling for extra....bobomb! Happy Birthday TJ! I wish I could have been there when he realized he could EAT Bowser!

It's soccer time!

This soccer team is called the "Soccerbots" and for Seth's birthday his mom wanted something to go with the team name so we decided to make "bots" for the boys and soccerballs for everyone else.... good times.
The bots before being placed in their cupcakes
Little army!
I think they went over well :)

Mini Mouse Party!

Mini Mouse party for a little 2 year old- sweet (no pun intended) cupcakes! I love how the cupcakes tie in with Mini's bow and heart. Mini originally was going to go on the cake but she ended up being big enough to be all by herself. More details in the post below......

Mini

Mini with a few of the cupcakes.

This is a 6" 4 layer cake

I started out planning to put her ON the cake but this is what worked.

Making of the Mini Mouse Party

I took pictures along the way to show all the steps involved in this kind of project, once its finished its easy to forget what went into it so here are some of the details.... covering the cake with fondant took me three tries, the chocolate mousse made for a tricky filling, I needed to place Popsicle sticks through the layers to keep it from sliding. Next time I need to add a ganache or butter cream as well to make it stick better!

Mini in the beginning...

After she dried for a couple days I added a coating of  royal icing so her face would be smooth.

Cutting all the pieces one by one for the cupcake toppers.

Using chocolate tinted pink to glue the bows together.

Placing the little nonpareils on one by one...

Making the cupcakes and cake layers- homemade chocolate mousse.

Wedding and Birthday- summer colors!

Pink, Orange and Yellow!
These were two different parties but both had similar colors that were so bright and fun- The minis were for a wedding reception and the big cupcakes for a Jonas Brothers birthday party so they also were blinged out in silver sugar :)
